This two-day excursion, starting with a morning flight from Tunis to Djerba, (Optional and on request) , promises total immersion in the world of the Berbers and the exploration of the great Tunisian Erg Oriental.

The first day begins with your arrival in Djerba, from where you will leave for Tataouine, taking a photo break at the Sebkhet el Melah salt lake to capture the striking beauty of this place.
The day continues with a visit to the Tataouine market, a crossroads of life and culture, especially lively on Mondays and Thursdays.
Ksar Ouled Soltane, a few kilometers away, then opens its doors for a dive into history before continuing towards Chenini, an emblematic Berber village where time seems to stand still.

After a tasty lunch in Guermassa, your journey takes you to Ksar Ghilane, an oasis surrounded by immense ocher sand dunes, where the desert unfolds in all its splendor.
In Ksar Ghilane, there is no shortage of activities: camel riding, quad biking, or even swimming in a hot spring.
The day ends with a memorable sunset over the desert, followed by dinner and a night in a tent in a Saharan camp, where the tradition of sand bread will be revealed to you.

The second day begins with breakfast at the camp, followed by free time to enjoy the dunes before leaving for Matmata.
This village is famous for its troglodyte houses, a unique architecture adapted to the arid climate.
After a local lunch in Tamezret, you will have the opportunity to discover Berber culture up close.
The visit to Matmata concludes your exploration before returning to Djerba for the return flight to Tunis.

PROGRAM TWO DAYS TRIP FROM TUNIS TO KSAR GHILANE AND MATMATA

Day 1

Departure from Tunis airport at 07:00, flight to Djerba (upon request).
Arrival at 08:00, pickup at Djerba Zarzis airport.
Departure towards Tataouine.
Photo stop at the salt lake Sebkhet el Melah (only for departures from Djerba or Zarzis).
Visit to the Tataouine market on Mondays and Thursdays.
Visit Ksar Ouled Soltane (25 km, 30-minute drive).
Guided tour of the Berber village of Chenini (45 minutes) (40 km, 38-minute drive).
Lunch at a restaurant in Guermassa (25 km, 25-minute drive).
Drive towards the desert to Ksar Ghilane, the oasis surrounded by immense ochre sand dunes (140 km, 2h10 drive).
Free time at Ksar Ghilane in the oasis.
Optional camel ride for 15€/hour or quad biking for 30€/hour.
Swimming in the 32° hot spring (if desired).
Departure by track, 20 km, to the Saharan campsite for an overnight stay in the Tunisian desert.
Settle in, watch the sunset over the desert, and see a demonstration of baking bread in the sand.
Dinner and overnight at the campsite in the Tunisian desert in your private tent (double tent).

Day 2

Breakfast and free time in the desert dunes.
Departure for Matmata via the Berber village of Tamezret (95 km, 1h20 drive).
Lunch with a local family in Tamezret.
Visit Matmata and a troglodyte house (12 km, 15-minute drive).
Return to Djerba and drop-off at the airport in the late afternoon around 18:00.
Return flight to Tunis at 20:15 (upon request).
Arrival in Tunis at 21:15.

Your adventure begins at dawn with a departure at 7:00 a.m. from Tunis airport, heading to the island of Djerba. (On demand).

As soon as you arrive at 8:00 a.m., an organized pick-up at Djerba Zarzis airport immerses you directly into the atmosphere of your journey.
The first stop takes you to Tataouine, a name that conjures up images of lunar landscapes and unsolved mysteries.

En route, a photo stop at the Sebkhet el Melah salt lake provides a spectacular backdrop to immortalize your journey.

Then, in Tataouine, market days (Monday and Thursday) allow you to immerse yourself in the local excitement, a real feast for the senses.

A lunch in Guermassa is the ideal opportunity to savor local dishes, before taking the road to the desert at Ksar Ghilane.

In Ksar Ghilane, enjoy free time to explore the oasis, bathe in a hot spring, or, if you feel like it, go for a camel or quad ride (optional).

After a demonstration of traditional sand bread baking, settle in for a night under the stars in a Saharan camp, comfortably housed in a private tent.

On the second day, after a revitalizing breakfast and free time in the dunes, you depart for Matmata via the Berber village of Tamezret.
In Matmata, discover the troglodyte houses, symbols of man's adaptation to his environment.

After lunch with a local in Tamezret, soak up the authenticity and simplicity of local life.

Your return to Djerba at the end of the afternoon marks the end of your adventure, with a flight scheduled for 8:15 p.m. to Tunis. (On request) , where you will arrive at 9:15 p.m., your head full of unforgettable memories.

Take away:

Concerning the equipment, you must include in a bag (this is better for sand):
Your change for the duration of the excursion or circuit, a flashlight or headlamp, as well as towels (not provided at the Saharan camp).
For the evening, in winter, bring warm clothes as it can be very cold at this time of year.
If you are cold, for the camp we recommend sports tracksuits for sleeping and if you need to go out at night.
Blankets, pillows and sheets are provided at the camp.

Berber and Desert Excursion

A magnificent experience to do absolutely. It was beyond our expectations. We had a driver (Houssine) who was very, very kind and attentive to his customers. We were traveling with a 4 year old child and Houssine took the trouble to approach the camels, show the donkeys or the goats, .... put on children's music, ..... And our guide (Dalel) , exceptional. She guided and advised us on activities, visits, .... from the moment she came to pick us up from the hotel, until our return. Great !
We made the excursion to KSAR GHILANE with night in the desert. Everything was perfect: the full program, reliable contacts, a comfortable 4x4 in very good condition, a professional and very friendly driver (Ali), a very involved, attentive, interesting guide (Mahmoud), who led the 2 days with great professionalism. You can go there with your eyes closed. Certainly the price was perhaps a little more expensive than what I have seen in other agencies, on the other hand it is certain that I do not regret it, it is also the price of peace and security (and the reliability of the people!) In short we saw lots of things, Mahmoud tried as much as possible to please and take us to more authentic places (far from the tourist buses for example). No forcing at all, neither for the quad, dromedary or purchases. We therefore recommend this serious agency, thank you to them for making our vacation peaceful!

Exceptional
The 4 of us had the chance to take the two-day “Berber and desert” excursion. Initially, we had some reluctance to go for this type of organized excursion (fear of a lack of authenticity in the visits, of finding ourselves surrounded by a hundred tourists at any time, etc.), but we absolutely wanted to spend a night in the Sahara desert and this is what led us to choose this formula. In the end, I will only say one word: exceptional! Khaled our guide was fantastic, and taught us a lot of things, about the local culture, the places visited but also about the history of Tunisia. The camp at the foot of the Sahara sand dunes was located in a magical environment. You can book an excursion via Grand Sahara Aventures with your eyes closed!
