Located approximately 100 km from Tataouine, Zarzis offers a perfect combination of seaside relaxation and a starting point for cultural excursions.

Starting from Zarzis, your journey to Tataouine will pass through varied landscapes, ranging from Lake Zarzis, a magnificent place changing color throughout the day, to desert plains.

Along the way you will learn about local history and make stops to take wonderful photos.

During this day trip to the Berber region of Tataouine, you will visit numerous ksour (in the singular, Ksar), Arab and Berber constructions, formerly used as fortified granaries for grain reserves and oil storage.

These ksour tell the story of the lives of the Berbers and Arabs in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, giving you an understanding of their way of life and traditions.

Tataouine is also renowned among Star Wars enthusiasts, because the name of the city inspired George Lucas' teams in the creation of the planet Tatooine.

For the record, Tataouine is widely known by the French thanks to the expression "go to Tataouine" or "go to Tataouine-les-Bains".

This expression takes its origin from the former French military penal colony which was built on a hill surrounding Tataouine, where prisoners were isolated and which closed in 1938.

PROGRAM OF THE EXCURSION FROM ZARZIS TO TATAOUINE AND CHENINI

Pick up in front of your accomodation at Zarzis, at 7:30 a.m., and direction Tataouine.

Photos stop at the Salt Lake, Sebkhet el Melah, the Chabhania salt sea.

Free time to explore Tataouine, with the possibility of visiting the market (open Mondays and Thursdays).

Visit Ksar Ouled Soltane, famous for its grain granaries, and one of the filming locations for Star Wars films.

Transfer to the Berber village of Chenini.

Guided tour of the Berber village of Chenini, lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Lunch at the restaurant.

Visit Ksar El Ferech.

Visit Ksar Hadada, another Star Wars filming location.

Return to Zarzis via Ksar Médenine.

The trip ends around 5:30 p.m., with drop-off in front off your accommodation at Zarzis.

This program offers a complete immersion in the culture, history and unique landscapes of the Tataouine region, with stops at emblematic locations, particularly those linked to those of Star Wars.

Transportation is either by 4x4 or minibus depending on the number of participants.

Our vehicles can be equipped with baby seats on request.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY TOUR FROM ZARZIS TO TATAOUINE AND CHENINI

We will pick you up at 7:30 am in front of your accommodation, to begin your discovery excursion and make the most of your day.

Along the way, you will cross beautiful olive groves. You will make a photo stop at a magnificent place that offers unique landscapes and different atmospheres depending on the time of day, the salt lake of Sebkhet el Melah.

You will stop in Tataouine for a coffee break and to visit the local market, if it is open, for an immersion in the lively streets of the city, you can also buy pastries, the famous gazelle horns, the local specialty.

You will begin your discovery with a visit to Ksar Ouled Soltane, a superb ksar off the beaten track which will allow you to discover the traditional architecture and history of the region, scenes from Star Wars were also filmed there.

Before enjoying your lunch at the restaurant, you will take a tour with a local guide of the hilltop village of Chenini.

This ancient Berber village is a remarkable site and one of the most visited in the region. Nestled on a ridge, it blends harmoniously into the color of the mountain rock.

You can admire the troglodyte dwellings, built into the rock, and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of this place full of history. The panoramic view from the top of the village is fantastic.

The guided tour of Chenini will last about an hour, but you will also have the opportunity to extend your visit if you wish, in order to enjoy the place more.

Lunch will be served at the restaurant.

You will continue your adventure by visiting Ksar El Ferech, then Ksar Hadada, a ksar famous for having served as a filming location for scenes from George Lucas' famous film, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Then take the road towards Medenine, a crossroads city and one of the last before reaching Ben Gardane and Libya.

In Medenine, you will discover the ancient ksar, which is one of the many Berber ksour that you visited throughout the day.

After this busy day, take the road back to Zarzis, we will drop you off in front of your accomodation around 5:30 p.m.

During your private tour, do not hesitate to ask your guide and driver to make additional stops to take photos or enjoy some magnificent places.

BEST BERBERE EXPERIENCE
