The distance between Djerba and Tataouine is 115 km which makes Djerba the ideal starting point for exploring the Berber region.

Explore the Berber Region of Tataouine: A Journey Through History

During this captivating day trip through the Berber region of Tataouine, you'll explore numerous ksour (singular: Ksar) fortified granaries built by both Arab and Berber communities to serve as food and oil storage.

These ancient structures reveal the lifestyle and traditions of the Berbers and Arabs during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, offering a fascinating glimpse into their past.

Tataouine also holds a special place among Star Wars enthusiasts, as the city’s name inspired George Lucas’s team in the creation of the iconic planet "Tatooine."

Additionally, for the French, Tataouine evokes the expression "go to Tataouine" or "go to Tataouine-les-Bains," symbolizing a journey to a remote, far-off place.

This saying originated from the former French military penal colony that operated in this desert region, isolating prisoners until its closure in 1938.

DAY TOUR PROGRAM TO TATAOUINE AND CHENINI

Pick-up in front of your accommodation in Djerba at 7:30 a.m., and direction to Tataouine.

Photos stop at the Salt Lake, Sebkhet el Melah.

Free time to explore Tataouine, with the possibility of visiting the market (open Mondays and Thursdays).

Visit Ksar Ouled Soltane, famous for its grain granaries, and one of the filming locations for Star Wars films.

Transfer to the Berber village of Chenini.

Guided tour of the Berber village of Chenini, lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Lunch at the restaurant.

Visit Ksar El Ferech.

Visit Ksar Hadada, another Star Wars filming location.

Return to Djerba via Médenine.

The day tour ends at around 5.30pm, with a return to your accommodation in Djerba.

This program offers a complete immersion into the culture, history, and unique landscapes of the Tataouine region, featuring stops at iconic locations, including those that inspired scenes from Star Wars.

The day tour is done in 4X4 or microbus depending on the number of participants .

7:30 AM - Pick-Up
We will pick you up at 7:30 AM in front of your accommodation to begin your day of exploration and ensure you make the most of your experience.

Olive Groves & Sebkhet el Melah
As you journey, you’ll pass through beautiful olive groves. We’ll stop at Sebkhet el Melah, a stunning salt lake offering unique landscapes that change depending on the time of day a perfect spot for photos.

Coffee Break & Local Market in Tataouine
In Tataouine, we’ll pause for a coffee break. If the market is open, you’ll have the chance to explore its lively streets, experience local life, and even purchase pastries, like the famous “gazelle horns,” a local specialty.

Ksar Ouled Soltane Visit
Your discovery begins with a visit to Ksar Ouled Soltane, an impressive ksar off the beaten track. You’ll learn about its traditional architecture and history; it’s also known as a filming location for Star Wars scenes.

Guided Tour of Chenini
Next, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of Chenini, an ancient Berber village perched on a ridge. This site is one of the region’s most remarkable, with its troglodyte dwellings blending into the mountain rock. You’ll immerse yourself in its authentic atmosphere and history while taking in the stunning panoramic view from the top. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes, but you may extend your visit to fully appreciate this unique place.

Lunch Break
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

Ksar El Ferech & Ksar Hadada Visits
Continue your adventure with visits to Ksar El Ferech and Ksar Hadada, both remarkable sites. Ksar Hadada, in particular, is known for its appearance in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Stop in Medenine
Next, we’ll head to Medenine, a crossroads town before reaching Ben Gardane and Libya. Here, you’ll explore the ancient ksar, another fascinating example of Berber architecture.

Return to Djerba
After a day full of discoveries, we’ll head back to Djerba, where we’ll drop you off at your accommodation around 5:30 PM.
